Description

Greillenstein Castle in Röhrenbach, Lower Austria, was first mentioned as a fortified castle in 1313. Today, the magnificent building is draped in history, which is accentuated by clear Renaissance and Baroque symbolism. The richly furnished interiors, and everything from the bathroom to the dungeons, can be best viewed during an exciting tour.
Original castle stories: A tour of Greillenstein Castle
A good way to explore the Renaissance and Baroque rooms of the castle - some of which are still in their original state - is to join one of the daily guided tours. There are 60 rooms in the castle, and more than half of them are open to visitors. Fascinating panelled and painted wooden ceilings, impressive tiled stoves and stucco décor are all on display. The Protestant Renaissance chapel and the private salons, as well as the knights´ hall, official rooms and courtroom are real eye-catchers. Austria´s only surviving medieval criminal records can be seen in the latter.
Guided tours of the public rooms of Greillenstein Castle at a glance:Registry and courtroom,Chapel,Old and new libraries,Knights´ hall and Turkish hall,Ancestral hall, salons and smoking room.
Other rooms - such as the bathroom, the games room and the dwarf gallery - can be explored independently before and after the tour.
Exhibitions and special tours by candlelight
The permanent and special exhibitions at Greillenstein Castle focus on political history and the lives of the former nobility. Brave visitors can join a candlelit tour, to discover the "dark sides” of the castle - from the attic, to secret passages, to the labyrinth-like cellar vaults.
Baroque dwarfs in Greillenstein's fairytale garden
In the 18th century, the spacious garden area was revitalised with some baroque features. The avenues and balustrades still exist to this day. This is also where the "Dwarf Garden” is hidden. Several Baroque dwarfs lived there for a long time, but were later moved into the castle, where they would be protected from the weather. In modern times, artists have reinterpreted fairy tales and legends about dwarfs in this part of the garden.
